Following up on yesterday’s discussion of traffic and energy, I wanted to share a few model photographs of a project which literally builds off of highway infrastructure. The site is along Chestnut Street between 30th Street and the Schuylkill Expressway, across the street from the old Post Office building. This section of Chestnut Street was recently rebuilt, with new bridge supports set between train tracks.
This project proposes attaching a giant truss to the underside of the road deck, a box truss attached to the steel I-Beams spanning between the support girders. This truss would attach along the midpoint of the I-Beams to maximize the vibration transferred from road deck to truss.
An explanation of what this truss supports and to what end all of this structure serves will follow tomorrow.
