These images of the NYC harbor were take from Valentino Pier in Red Hook on October 29th, 2022. This was 10 years to the day from Hurricane Sandy’s landfall at a particular low point of the neighborhood and one of the first areas to flood (see Jim McMahon’s map of the storm surge for additional detail of how far and how deep the water reached). The images were take from a 75mm-300mm zoom lens, often used for landscapes or wildlife photography. The higher the number, the more the zoom and the more compressed the photograph. Locations which are separated geographically (and culturally) by miles are flattened and compressed in the same view, creating a new context within which to see.
